Sustainability

With worldwide population estimated to grow to almost 10 billion by 2050, one of the world's greatest challenges is the efficient and sustainable production of seafood. With a uniquely low carbon footprint and higher protein and energy retention than terrestrial livestock, aquaculture is the most sustainable way to achieve global food security.

EUROPEAN FLAT OYSTER SPAT

Once abundant in the North Sea and European coastal waters, European oyster (Ostrea edulis) populations have declined by 95% since the mid-19th and 20th centuries, making European oyster reefs one of the most depleted marine habitats throughout Europe. Whilst the original decline was largely due to overfishing, European flat oyster stocks have since suffered further mortality following the outbreak of Marteilia refringens and Bonamia ostreae – two deadly, oyster-specific diseases.

Oysters have a pivotal role to play in maintaining the health of our oceans, with the ecological importance of oyster reefs now recognised worldwide. Restoration efforts across the UK and Europe have expanded drastically over recent years but obtaining healthy and disease-free European flat oyster spat, to replenish and save our seas, continues to be a challenge.

This is our primary reason for focusing on the production of clean, healthy, and disease-free European flat oyster spat. A product built for the restoration market, we take an innovative approach to ensuring our cultivation process, from obtaining broodstock through to growing spat, remains bio-secure and disease-free.

EUROPEAN CLAWED LOBSTERS

Our desire to aid the replenishment of European clawed lobster stocks, coupled with our passion for sustainable aquaculture has led us to begin investigating and testing the on-land production of lobster juveniles.

Much like oysters, natural European clawed lobster stocks are a valuable and sought-after seafood, threatened by overfishing and naturally high mortality rates. By utilising an economically-viable lobster hatchery system, we hope to soon offer a lobster juvenile product that benefits the repopulation of wild fisheries, as well as supports today’s fishermen and the fishermen of the future.

RESTOCKING FISHERIES AND AQUACULTURE OPPORTUNITIES

In order to ensure the products we produce are disease-free and healthy, all incoming broodstock to our hatchery undergoes intensive disease screening. Water supply, both incoming to the facility and outgoing, is cleaned to ensure no unwanted pathogen enters or leaves the system. With restoration of wild and managed populations a core focus, this attention to detail in keeping the species pure (not mixing with other cultured species) and healthy is a priority.

The stringent processes we follow give our customer’s confidence that our products are among the best in the industry, allowing them security as they replenish our oceans with stock that is only going to improve its cleanliness and aid the sustainability of these core marine species.

PROGRESSIVE AND POSITIVE R&D

Focused on aiding the development of the aquaculture industry as a whole, we concentrate on producing prime shellfish products. Our competitive edge comes from leading science, investing in local and world-class talent and a research and development programme that is highly targeted at continuing to improve and expand our products and their performance.
